Kenya suffers from occasional, headline-grabbing violent crime. The country has porous borders with unstable states, particularly in the north and east. Large scale terrorist attacks have taken place in the past, carried out by Al Qaeda or affiliate groups. Outbreaks of civil unrest, of an ethnic or political nature, can occur in populated areas. Several governments advise visitors to exercise caution in Kenya and to avoid travel to the Kibera, Mathare, Kasirani and Eastleigh suburbs of Nairobi, Kisumu and the areas bordering Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia.
