Cases of instability & banditry take place from time to time in remote rural areas, particularly in Viengchan, Xaisomboun and Bokao provinces. Armed groups occasionally clash in these regions. There is unexploded ordnance left over from the Vietnam War in some parts of the country, concentrated near Phonsovan and in the southeast. See map.
