Country overall: Medium Low Risk
Coastal areas of Southeast Sabah: Medium High Risk

Demonstrations take place in Kuala Lumpur city centre, though they are usually tightly controlled by the authorities. There is some petty and scam crime in urban areas, with a higher prevalence in border towns such as Johor Bahru. Over Malaysia's northern border there is instability and violence in Thailand's southern border provinces. There is a kidnap risk in the coastal areas of southeastern Sabah. Philippine groups have previously taken foreign hostages in this area.
