Country overall: Medium Risk

Terai Region: Medium High Risk

Demonstrations and strikes take place regularly in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. In recent years there have been occasional small-scale bomb attacks in the capital including in the tourist district of Thamel. The Terai plain, along the southern border with India, experiences frequent unrest. The trekking regions are relatively safe but the informal 'taxation' of trekkers lingers on in some areas.

Helmut: I trekked from Jiri to Gokyo recently and only met one Maoist. He happily showed me his Maoist party card but didn't give me any problems.
