Country overall: Medium High Risk
Terrorism from the Niger Delta rebel group, MEND, and northern Islamic militants, Boko Haram, poses a high threat in the country. The bombing of the UN compound in Abuja in August 2011 signalled a potential increase in capability. There is frequent sectarian unrest in the northern states of Bauchi, Kano, Yobe and Borno. Throughout the country, crime, often of a violent nature, is a problem in urban areas, particularly Lagos. Confidence tricks and corruption are widespread. Rebel groups operate in the Niger Delta region and kidnap for ransom is common in this area. Multiple governments advise their nationals to travel to Nigeria only if the trip is essential.
