Violent crime is the main problem in a country where the majority of the population lives in relative poverty. Ethnic and trade union related civil unrest can occur in populated areas. Bomb attacks have taken place in the past but the large scale terrorism seen in other countries in recent years has not afflicted South Africa since the end of the apartheid era.
