Country overall: Medium Risk
Southern Provinces (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla) & Burma border (Shan & Karen states): Medium High Risk
Watch out for public disorder in urban areas. The country is in a state of uncertainty in the aftermath of the recent protests. Some governments advise their nationals to defer travel to Thailand at this time. If you're heading to the Cambodia border be aware of the dispute in the vicinity of Preah Vihear temple. In the 'Deep South' there's a conflict between the region's Muslims and the Thai state. Bombings and shootings happen regularly in this area. See the map.

Baz: The death of the British yachtsman off Tarutao island in the south was a surprise and spoke more of the desperation of starving, exploited fishermen than a pre-meditated will to commit murder.

trat: To travelling man: there is no history of foreigners being targeted for kidnapping or other crime in the deep south of thailand. I go in and out and perceive the risk as indirect or wrong place, wrong time.

Travelling Man: I plan to go on a business trip to Songkhla soon. Is it just an indirect threat of a bomb? or is there intimidation or a kidnap threat to foreigners in connection with the conflict?

TD: There is an indirect risk to foreigners in the southern provinces. Bombings & shootings happen often in Yala, Pattani & Narathiwat. Songkhla is safer but there are sometimes bombings in Hat Yai. I always stay in hotels with good access control.
