Politically related social instability has manifested itself in paralysing street demonstrations in recent years, with occasional outbreaks of violence in the capital. Though underlying divisions remain, the recent elections have restored a degree of electoral accountability and therefore, calm. Most travellers don't experience problems.
If you're heading towards Cambodia be aware of the border disputes in the vicinity of Prasat Pra Viharn and Ta Moan temples. In the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and to a lesser degree, Songkhla, there's a conflict between the region's Muslims and the Thai state. Bombings and shootings happen regularly in this area.
