Overall: Medium High Risk

There is a very high crime rate in Brazil, particularly in the deprived urban settlements (favelas) where drug gangs operate. There is also a high risk in urban centres and tourist areas especially after dark and during festival periods. Demonstrations sometimes result in civil unrest. In the past there has been kidnapping near the Colombian border.
