Demonstrations can provoke a violent reaction from security forces. The Shwedagon and Sule pagodas, in Yangon, were focal points for the 2007 unrest. Bomb attacks sometimes occur in shopping malls and business areas. The country is a patchwork of ethnic uprisings and ceasefires. Parts of Shan and Karen States are off limits as are areas in the northwest, due to military activity and the heroin refineries. There is a dispute between Burma and Bangladesh over an oil field off the Sittwe coast. Their shared border may experience tension.
