Country rating: Low Medium Risk
The widespread unrest in Xinjiang province in July 2009 and the Tibetan riots of mid-2008 illustrate the fragile balance that exists between indigenous peoples and Han immigrants on China's western fringes. In Xingjiang, Uighur separatists sometimes stage attacks against Chinese authorities. The earthquake in Sichuan in May 2008 damaged infrastructure in that province. China is also susceptible to other natural calamities such as floods and landslides. Small scale bombings occasionally take place, usually in crowded areas or on public transport.
