Country rating: Medium High Risk Sinai Peninsula: Medium High Risk
Egypt is currently experiencing political uncertainty in the aftermath of the protests that ousted President Mubarak. There have been a number of terrorist attacks in recent years in the Sinai peninsula and Cairo. The 1990s saw a string of incidents throughout the country that targeted tourist locations. Two groups, Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya were held responsible. In contrast, general crime levels throughout the country are relatively low, though petty crime does occur. Demonstrations take place from time to time. There is a kidnap risk in the southwest border area. Multiple governments advise visitors to exercise a high level of caution in Egypt and to avoid non-essential travel to the Sinai Peninsula.
