Civil unrest, including the blockading of major highways, particularly around Tegucigalpa, is a symptom of ongoing political uncertainty. There are high crime levels in Honduras and sensible security precautions should be taken by visitors, though much of the crime takes place within the local population. Many governments advise their nationals to exercise caution in Honduras. There are landmines in the Nicaraguan border area, particularly in Choluteca, El Paraiso provinces, Rio Coco region and near the Atlantic coast. The hurricane season runs from June to November.
