| The diversity of the Indian subcontinent comes with an equally wide array of risks. Urban areas have suffered occasional large scale terrorist incidents, as demonstrated by the Mumbai attacks in November 2008.
Widespread inter-community unrest can be sparked off by religious tension; most prevalent in Gujurat and Mahastra states.
The combination of extreme poverty with no state welfare provision and conspicuous affluence, often side by side in India’s cities, means that there is a risk of petty criminal acts such scams, pick-pocketing, drink doping and bag snatching. Surprisingly for such a demographic mix, the violent crime rates are generally low in the international business zones of the main cities.
In the north-eastern states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and western Meghalaya, a number of indigenous secessionist groups seek independence from the state. Bombing and shooting attacks take place in these areas. The situation is worsened by weak government control in some areas and the porous nature of the borders with neighbouring Bangladesh and Myanmar.
In the eastern states of Bihar, Jharkand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and west Bengal, Naxalite (Maoist) insurgents conduct a low level conflict against the state, periodically hijacking trains, ambushing security forces, kidnapping and planting bombs. In Jammu & Kashmir, in the northwest, there is an ongoing sectarian conflict and large-scale civil unrest, kidnap and terrorism occur in the central and western parts of these states.
The most frequent natural hazards include earthquakes – the north and west of the country are in a particularly active seismic zone – landslides in mountainous regions and floods in low-lying areas during the monsoon season (May to September). |
