The July 2009 bombings of the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in Jakarta demonstrate that Jemaah Islamiyah retains its capability to launch attacks in Indonesia. The pattern established over recent years indicates that high profile and crowded tourist locations associated with Westerners are among places at specific risk.
There is ethnic and religious tension in some parts of the archipelago including central Sulawesi, West Papua and Maluku. Aceh is still not totally stable and there is a small amount of violence. Historically active piracy hotspots include the Malacca Straits off Belawan, the Riau archipelago off Singapore and the Anambas & Natuna islands. Jakarta and Surabaya have a high crime rate.
