The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused widespread destruction and thousands of deaths along the northeast coast of Japan's main Honshu island and the southern coast of Hokkaido. Radiation from failing nuclear power plants on Honshu is likely to be a long term impediment to the return to normality in these areas. Further tremors are inevitable.
